Word & Character Counter

Paste or type text to see clear, live counts without uploading your writing to a server.

Your text

Every count updates locally as you type.

Private by default

This tool processes your input in the current browser tab and does not upload it for processing.

How to use the word and character counter

Paste or type text into the workspace. Counts update in the browser as the text changes, so you can compare the same draft against a word limit, character limit, paragraph target, or reading-time estimate without uploading the text for processing.

Use the same counter for the whole workflow

Different editors can disagree at the edges because “word” and “character” are not universal concepts. Hyphenated terms, emoji, combining marks, CJK text, and unusual whitespace can be segmented differently by different applications.

If a publisher, form, school, or platform enforces its own built-in limit, that destination is the final authority. Use this counter to edit toward the target, then confirm with the destination’s own counter before submitting important work.

Words, characters, and bytes answer different questions

  • Words are useful for essays, articles, speeches, and editorial limits.
  • Characters matter for fields with hard text-length limits and can include or exclude spaces depending on the metric shown.
  • UTF-8 bytes measure encoded storage/transport size rather than what a reader sees.
  • Paragraphs and reading time are estimates for structure and pacing, not publishing rules.

An emoji can be visually one character while occupying multiple Unicode code points or bytes. That is why a visible-character count and a byte count can legitimately differ.

Example workflow for a hard limit

If a draft is 1,120 words and the target is 1,000, first remove repeated ideas rather than only shortening individual words. After the large edit, use paragraph and sentence context to ensure the text still reads naturally. For a character-limited form, keep the counter visible while editing but verify the final pasted value in that form before submission.

Privacy

Counting runs in the current browser tab. The text is not sent to a server for counting and is not included in analytics payloads. Avoid pasting confidential material into any web page unless the device, browser, and surrounding environment also meet your security requirements.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is the text I enter uploaded or stored?

No. The counter runs in your browser, and MyTool0 does not send the text to a server for processing.

Why can the word count differ from another editor?

Editors may use different rules for punctuation, contractions, hyphenated terms, and languages without spaces, so small differences are possible.

How is estimated reading time calculated?

The estimate uses 200 words per minute and rounds any non-zero result up to the next full minute.
